182: What’s so fascinating about getting old?

In this week’s podcast, Dr Martin Hyde is making getting old sexy.

He explains how the study of ageing, known as gerontology, is a huge and exciting area in which to work because almost everything we can think about is impacted by our own personal experience of ageing.  He looks at the impact of how populations themselves are ageing, and the challenges and opportunities this presents for individuals, organisations and society in general. There is a lot to consider.

I chat to Martin about an ageing workforce, and what this means for employers.  Planning for retirement is becoming harder for those in their 50s and 60s as the retirement age is a moving feast.

Getting old also impacts the young!  Martin highlights the importance of looking at your whole life course, so you plan for what it takes to be old and happy.

I hope our conversation will open your eyes to how the perception of getting old does not match reality.
